What to Wear at 50+
Instead of disappearing into a fashion wilderness, never to be seen again, it is time for women in their 50s to embrace a more elegant side of fashion and establish a signature style of their own.
A style icon at 51
Women such as Dame Helen Mirren (the poster girl for grown-up girls), Sharon Stone, Carol Vorderman, Twiggy, Joan Collins and Joanna Lumley prove that it is possible to become more glamorous with age. It is all down to clever age-appropriate dressing and wearing pieces that flatter the body shape
What to Wear in Your 50s
Whilst there are still many fripperies of youth that can still be got away with as a women gets older, her 50s is a good time for reassessing her wardrobe.
Fashion over 50 means that it’s time to bid farewell to mini dresses, shorter-than-short shorts, jumpsuits and cropped leggings and shapeless dresses in favour of staple items such as a good quality well-cut pair of jeans or trousers, dresses that are cut to suit your shape,(such as a wrap dress for an hour-glass figure). Team these staple pieces with more directional items, which may include a statement necklace, cuff, a look-at-me clutch bag, or a an on-trend piece such as a waterfall cardigan.
Hemlines should finish just above or on the knee rather than high above them, and avoid skirts and dresses that finish at the calf, as these can be ageing.
In her book Style Clinic
(Harper Collins 2009), Paula Reed suggests letting one key fashion trend be the focus of a look, rather than embrace many. A shirt or dress in the shape-of-the-season, anon-trend print or a hip handbag will look stylish without trying too hard to still be trendy. Fashion over 50 is about not trying too hard with trends, and only embracing one or two that really suit you.
The ratio of investment pieces hanging in the wardrobe should be around 70:30, with around 30% representing the look-of-the-moment. Instead, use on-trend accessories such as a fashionable belt, a scarf in a season-appropriate print .
